Today’s July 23rd Reading

Today is the Feast Day in the Roman Kalendar of St Bridget of Sweden, in the Coptic the Falling Asleep of St John of the Golden Gospel, in the Russian Kalendar the Martyrs Theophimus and his 14 companions and in the Episcopal/Anglican it is the transferred feast of St Mary Magdalen who the Orthodox Church calls “Equal to the Apostles”!

Almighty God, whose blessed Son restored Mary Magdalene to health of body and of mind, and called her to be a witness of his resurrection: Mercifully grant that the assistance of her prayers and by your grace we may be healed from all our infirmities and know you in the power of his unending life; who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen. (Collect amended from the BCP)

The Gospel Reading for today according to the Russian and OCA Lectionaries:

What is the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees of today?
Is it the wrapping of the Cross in “the flag”? Is it excluding people from the Fellowship and Ministry of the Gathering because of gender or orientation? Is large national budgets and financial assets of the institution of religion?

Matthew 16:1-6 (Gospel)

Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing Him asked that He would show them a sign from heaven.
He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’;
and in the morning, ‘It will be foul weather today, for the sky is red and threatening.’ Hypocrites! You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.
A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. And He left them and departed.
Now when His disciples had come to the other side, they had forgotten to take bread.
Then Jesus said to them, “Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the Sadducees.”
