Today’s August 14th Reading

The Collect from the BCP amended for the Feast of Blessed Jonathan Myrick Daniels whose feast today is August the 14 with the Gospel Reading from the Coptic Kalendar.

O God of justice and compassion, you put down the proud and mighty from their place, and lift up the poor and the afflicted: we give you thanks for your faithful witness Jonathan Myrick Daniels, who, in the midst of injustice and violence, risked and gave his life for another; and we pray that we, following his example and with the help of his prayers, may make no peace with oppression; through Jesus Christ the just one, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

This humble Episcopal seminarian gave his life in service to “these little ones” and by his witness teaches us especially in this time and atmosphere what we may be called to do and Whom we serve. Pray for us Blessed Jonathan for Jesus Sake Amen

Today’s August the 14th Gospel Reading is taken from the Coptic Lectionary and it is a clear warning to those who would use religion to enforce bigotry and exclusion. It is also Jesus telling his Church what authority it has to “loose and bind” which should forever silence the debate as to continuing revelation!

Gospel
Matt 18:10-20 [Arabic] “Take heed that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that in heaven their angels always see the face of My Father who is in heaven. For the Son of Man has come to save that which was lost.
“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray. Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish.
“Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that “by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.
“Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
“Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.”

Today in the Roman Kalendar is the Feast of St Maximilian Kolbe who like Blessed Jonathan gave his life to save another who was not even of the same religion as he. In the Coptic Kalendar it is the Commemoration of the Martyrdom of the Hebrew Saints Lazarus the Elder, his wife Salomi and their children, Abeem, Antonius, Hosea, Lazarus the Younger, Aniana, Semuna, and Marcolus. In the Russian Kalendar it is the Feast of St Micah the Prophet. Pray for us O Holy Ones as we make our pilgrimage to the Place where you reside in the Company of God Father Son and Holy Spirit through Jesus Christ Our Lord Amen+
