St Aidan’s Day August 31

Today’s August 31st Feast of St Aidan and in Western Kalendar, Anglican/Episcopal and in the Russian/OCA Kalendar. Collect and Gospel to follow.
O loving God, you called your servant Aidan from the peace of a cloister to re-establish the Christian mission in northern England, and endowed him with gentleness, simplicity, and strength: Grant that we, following his example and with the assistance of his prayers, may use what you have given us for the relief of human need, and may persevere in commending the saving Gospel of our Redeemer Jesus Christ; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.( BCP amended.)

We are not to be sitting around waiting on the consummation of the Kalendar whatever it may be we have work to do.

The Gospel according to the Coptic Lectionary:

Gospel
Lk 19:11-19 [Arabic] “Now as they heard these things, He spoke another parable, because He was near Jerusalem and because they thought the kingdom of God would appear immediately. Therefore He said: “A certain nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and to return. So he called ten of his servants, delivered to them ten minas, and said to them, “Do business till I come.’ But his citizens hated him, and sent a delegation after him, saying, “We will not have this man to reign over us.’
“And so it was that when he returned, having received the kingdom, he then commanded these servants, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, that he might know how much every man had gained by trading. Then came the first, saying, “Master, your mina has earned ten minas.’ And he said to him, “Well done, good servant; because you were faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ And the second came, saying, “Master, your mina has earned five minas.’ Likewise he said to him, “You also be over five cities.”

It is also in the Russain/OCA Kalendar the Feast of St Eanswythe of Kent, the Commemoration of the Martyrdom of St Cyprian of Carthage, bishop and the Feast Day of St Gennadius the Patriarch. In the Coptic Kalendar it is the Feast of the Falling Asleep in the Lord of St Macarius,114th Pope of Alexandria, and of St Bessarion the Mystic of Egypt. May these and all our holy friends and companions pray with us and for us through Jesus Christ Our Lord Amen+
