September 1st Reading
September 1st Reading for the Feast of St David Oakerhater the Deacon with the Collect, amended, from the BCP and the Gospel Reading from the Coptic Lectionary.
O God of unsearchable wisdom and infinite mercy, you chose a captive warrior, David Oakerhater, to be your servant, and sent him to be a missionary to his own people, and to exercise the office of a deacon among them: Liberate us with with the aid of his prayers, who commemorate him today, from bondage to self, and empower us for service to you and to the neighbors you have given us; through Jesus Christ, the captain of our salvation; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Listen to the words of St David Oakerhater to his people when he returned to them as a deacon.
“You all know me. You remember when I led you out to war I went First, and what I told you was true. Now I have been away to the East and I have learned about another captain, the Lord Jesus Christ, and he is my leader. He goes first, and all He tells me is true. I come back to my people to tell you to go with me now in this new road, a war that makes all for peace.”
Now to the words of the Gospel taken from the Coptic Kalendar:
St David knew injustice and war. He knew what it meant to be denied his dignity by those who had military might and chose nation over Justice. He was an eloquent witness to the Truth of this particular passage,to all the Truths of the Gospel and to He who taught the Gospel.
Gospel 21:12-19 [Arabic]
But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and persecute you, delivering you up to the synagogues and prisons. You will be brought before kings and rulers for My name’s sake. But it will turn out for you as an occasion for testimony. Therefore settle it in your hearts not to meditate beforehand on what you will answer; for I will give you a mouth and wisdom which all your adversaries will not be able to contradict or resist. You will be betrayed even by parents and brothers, relatives and friends; and they will put some of you to death. And you will be hated by all for My name’s sake. But not a hair of your head shall be lost. By your patience possess your souls.
Along with St David Oakerhater we celebrate in the Russian/OCA Kalendar the Feast of St Simeon Stylites and his Mother St Martha, the Commemoration of the Martyrdom of St Aithalas the Deacon, the 40 Holy Women of and St Ammoun the Deacon of Thrace and St Callista with her brother St Hermogenes.
