September 11th Reading
Today September 11 we remember those who died during the attacks on the World Trade Centre that included not only North/South Americans but people of many nationalities and religions including Moslems and people of no faith. They were male and female and gay and straight Democrats and Republicans Labour and Tories. It is interesting that today in the Russian/OCA Kalendar is the Commemoration of the Slaughter of 9,000 people of the Christian Faith by a Persian Emperor as well as those martyred by the Roman Empire. In the Coptic Kalendar it is the first day of the Coptic Year in the Month of Tout. I am certain that on this day human beings somewhere on this planet in some past century or even in this one have slaughtered one another in the name of god or country. Syria immediately comes to mind. We are supposedly a sentient species and yet we commit wholesale murder of one another and are daily killing the planet on which we live. How can we deny the reality of evil, how can we say it is a psychological anthropological failing of our genetic history! No this is sin pure and simple. I know that for some in the emergent church movement the concept of sin is embarrassing, a throwback to dogma and doctrines, not in synch with our modern relativity but embarrassing or not sin and evil are real and alive and well! Repentance is a turning away from and a turning towards the Light and the Light is Love. Let us all recommit to Light and Love as Jesus teaches us to do and as the great religions of the world call us to do.
Now for the Gospel for today taken from the Russian/OCA Kalendar. In this passage Jesus marvels at the unbelief I bet he still does.
Mark 6:1-7 (Gospel)
Then He went out from there and came to His own country, and His disciples followed Him.
And when the Sabbath had come, He began to teach in the synagogue. And many hearing Him were astonished, saying, “Where did this Man get these things? And what wisdom is this which is given to Him, that such mighty works are performed by His hands!
Is this not the carpenter, the Son of Mary, and brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us? So they were offended at Him.
But Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his own country, among his own relatives, and in his own house.”
Now He could do no mighty work there, except that He laid His hands on a few sick people and healed them.
And He marveled because of their unbelief. Then He went about the villages in a circuit, teaching.
And He called the twelve to Himself, and began to send them out two by two, and gave them power over unclean spirits.
In the Roman Rite today is the Feast of St Cyprian 2nd century bishop of Carthage. In the Coptic Kalendar it is the Feast of the Falling Asleep of St Melyos of Alexandria and the Commemoration of the Martyrdom of St Bartholomew the Apostle. In the Russian/OCA Kalendar it is the Commemoration of the Martyrdom of St Demetrius who was converted by St Cornelius the Centurion whose beloved companion was healed by Jesus, and of St Euanthea his wife and St Demetrian his son. In addition the Saints Diodorus, Didymus and Diomedes who were martyred during one of the early persecutions of Christians. Lastly it is the Commemoration of the Martyrdom of 9.000 Christians by a Persian emperor. of the May these our holy companions pray for and with us through Jesus Christ Our Lord Amen+
