“Dinner on the Grounds”

Oh yes I loved “homecoming” I can still remember those great wooden barrels of ice cold water with huge chunks of ice that you got from the ice plant floating in them and table spread far and wide with every kind of Southern cooking imaginable! There was one table alone that had more pound cakes than you could count. Homemade ice cream of several flavors and gallons of sweet tea. The adults also had great urns of coffee. Yellow-jackets flying everywhere and invariably some kid fell and skint their knee and screamed bloody murder! One time we had a family gossip whose name was Claudette but everyone called her Claude talking about my aunt who she said she had heard was a lesbian to which one of my great aunts replied “I thought she was a Methodist!”
