Reading for November 17th
Today in the Roman Kalendar is the Feast of St Elizabeth of Hungary. In the Episcopal Kalendar it is the Feast of St Hugh of Lincoln who the Jewish people call “Hugh of Blessed Memory” for he on at least two occasions saved the Jewish population of London. It is his Feast as well in the Anglican Kalendar along with St Hilda the Abbess and St Elizabeth of Hungary. In the Coptic Kalendar it is the 6th day of the Coptic Egyptian Month of Hator and the Commemoration of the Four Incorporeal Beasts mentioned in both the Old and New Testaments. In Coptic Tradition these Incorporeal Beings make intersession for all Creation. In the Russian/OCA Kalendar it is the Feast of St. Gregory the Wonderworker of Neo-Cæsarea (ca. 266-270). Ven. Nikon, Abbot of Rádonezh, disciple of Ven. Sergius (1426). Ven. Lazarus the Iconographer, of Constantinople (ca. 857). Martyr Gobron (Michael) and 133 soldiers, of Georgia (914). Ven. Genadius of Vatopedi (Mt. Athos).
The Collect amended is taken from the Church of England.
