Humble and gentle Polycarp

St Ignatius of Antioch said of St Polycarp who lived in the first century and was ordained a bishop by the Apostle John the Beloved “This age is in need of you if it is to reach God, just as pilots need winds, and as a storm-tossed sailor needs a port.” Are we any different ? Our age is one where cynicism is the norm, doubt is faith, relativism orthodoxy, and exclusion the norm. Even Jesus wonders if he will find any one of faith when he returns! Polycarp was a gentle man who did not seek the limelight like so many preachers and deist bishops do today. He loved people and he loved God in Christ Jesus and his life and death are examples of how one is called to live the Way of the Cross and the Joy of the Resurrection.
